Matthew 15:14

Ever since man was created in the garden of Eden, he has longed for and desired things besides the ordinary things. Man has wanted the praise of men more than the praise of God (John 12:43). Man also wants to have the preeminence among men (3 John 9).

Could these two things be why the preachers of today who proclaim to preach and teach God's word call themselves, and allow others to call them, names such as Reverend, Most Holy Reverend, Father, Holy Father, Most Holy Father, Right Reverend, Most High Reverend, Pope, and Doctor?

The Bible has something to say about these names. First of all, the name Reverend is God's name. This name is reserved for God and God alone. Just how do I know this. Well, the Bible tells me so.

Psalm 111:9 reads: "He sent redemption unto his people, he hath commanded his covenant forever. Holy and Reverend is his name." So the name of Reverend is God's name, and no man should call himself this name.

How about the name of Father? This, too, is condemned by the word of God if it is used in a religious way. Hear what our Lord has said in regards to this. "And call no man your father upon the earth for one is your father which is in heaven" (Matthew 23:9).

Someone may ask, "Why all the fuss? What difference does if make if we call our preacher Reverend, Father, Doctor, etc.?" The difference is that when we do things such as this, we are adding to the word of God and this is condemned by God's word.

Reading from Revelation 22:18, 19, we read, "For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, if any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book. And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life and out of the Holy city and from the things which are written in this book."

Will you still call yourself Reverend? Will you still allow others to call you Reverend, Father, and the other names mentioned above?

I would urge you to think about these things and reject all man made religious names. Do not accept false teaching. Do not be a BLIND FOLLOWER OF BLIND LEADERS.
